MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface.

MIDI is a standardized electronic language. It lets sound modules, keyboards and computer software programs all talk to each other, even if they are from different manufacturers.

In order for one piece of hardware equipment to "talk" to another using MIDI, they must be connected using a MIDI cable.

Tip: If you are troubleshooting a MIDI setup in your studio, remember there are two different kinds of cables: MIDI and audio. The MIDI electronic language travels along a MIDI cable, and is simply information, not actual sound.

The actual sound travels along an audio cable. Audio cables can be connected to amplifiers, which are connected to speakers, monitors or amps, so we can hear the sound.
