Pattern Recognition in Music Reading

Musicians who are quick and effective music readers don't read individual notes one at a time. Instead, they read groups of notes, patterns of notes, and notes in relation to other notes. That's one of the reasons why learning and drilling such things as landmark notes and intervals of a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on, (which later form scales, chord inversions and chord voicings) is more important than simply memorizing and naming all the lines and spaces on the musical staff.
